This bill amends the New York State Penal Law to expand protections for medical providers and hospital personnel by modifying the definitions of assault against certain professionals. The legislation broadens the list of protected individuals to include a more comprehensive range of healthcare workers such as physicians, physician assistants, healthcare providers, nurses (including registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, and licensed practical nurses), ambulance personnel, hospital directors, medical directors, hospital employees, attendants, agents, and volunteers. Specifically, the bill makes it a criminal offense to intentionally prevent these medical professionals from performing their lawful duties, including by using an animal to obstruct their work or by causing physical injury. The bill also applies these expanded protections to scenarios involving transit workers, public service employees, and other essential workers. By removing the previous narrow references to only "registered nurses" and "licensed practical nurses" and replacing them with a more inclusive list of medical professionals, the legislation aims to provide stronger legal protection for a wider range of healthcare workers who may face assault or interference while performing their duties. The changes will take effect 60 days after the bill becomes law.
