This bill amends the New York General Business Law to require consumer reporting agencies (companies that collect and sell personal credit and financial information) to provide consumers with their complete file information at no charge, whenever the consumer requests it. Currently, agencies can charge fees for providing this information, but the proposed change mandates that consumers can obtain their entire file, including all information in the agency's records, sources of that information (with some limited exceptions for investigative reports), and a list of who has received their consumer report for employment purposes in the past two years and for other purposes in the past six months, without paying any cost. The bill aims to improve transparency and make it easier for individuals to access and understand their personal credit information by removing financial barriers to obtaining their own records. The amendment would take effect immediately upon passage.
