This bill allows members of certain retirement systems in Georgia to purchase up to 36 months of creditable service, which counts towards their retirement benefits, for active military service performed on or after January 1, 1990, provided they have at least ten years of membership service. To obtain this creditable service, members must apply, provide proof of qualifying military service, and pay the full actuarial cost determined by the board of trustees, with options for a lump-sum payment within 90 days or a payment plan similar to other retirement contributions. However, this creditable service will not be granted if the member was not honorably discharged, for reserve duty, for periods already counted as membership service, or for any portion of military service used to determine eligibility for other state or federal retirement benefits, excluding Social Security. This provision is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, but only if it is fully funded according to the "Public Retirement Systems Standards Law"; otherwise, it will be automatically repealed on that date.
