This bill amends the New York vehicle and traffic law to require that for-hire vehicles with a chassis manufactured and then modified to transport ten or more people (including the driver) must be equipped with an operable carbon monoxide detector. Currently, the law only requires such vehicles to have a hand fire extinguisher of a specific rating. The bill mandates that the transportation commissioner, in consultation with the transportation commissioner, will develop rules and regulations to implement this new requirement. The carbon monoxide detector requirement aims to enhance passenger safety by providing early warning of potentially dangerous carbon monoxide levels in these larger passenger vehicles. The bill will go into effect 90 days after it becomes law, giving vehicle operators and manufacturers time to comply with the new safety provision.
