This bill increases the financial penalties for landlords who fail to file timely rent registration statements in New York City, raising the fine from $500 to $1,000 per unregistered unit for each month the registration is late. The bill modifies two existing laws: the administrative code of New York City and the Emergency Tenant Protection Act. Under the new provisions, if a landlord does not file a proper and timely rent registration statement, they will be barred from collecting rent above the legal regulated rent until the registration is filed. The Division of Housing and Community Renewal will provide notice of the delinquency via electronic mail and physical mail, and after the notice, the landlord will be subject to the increased fine.
