This bill creates a new type of license plate called "Survivor of the Bravest" for family members of paid professional firefighters who died in the line of duty. Specifically, the bill defines eligible family members as a spouse, registered domestic partner, parent, sibling, or child of a firefighter who died during the course of their employment. Qualified individuals who reside in the state can request this distinctive license plate by submitting an application to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and providing proof of their relationship to the deceased firefighter. The plate will be issued with the standard registration fee plus an additional $25 annual service charge. This service charge will be deposited into the DMV's distinctive license plate development fund, which is used for producing, designing, advertising, and marketing specialized license plates. Before the plates can be produced, the bill requires either a $6,000 surety bond or a minimum of 200 pre-orders to cover production costs. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, with some provisions taking immediate effect to allow for regulatory preparation.
