This bill creates new eligibility requirements for candidates seeking political party nominations or running as no party affiliation (NPA) candidates in Florida. Specifically, candidates must have maintained their party (or lack of party) registration for at least 365 consecutive days before the qualifying period for a general election. Political party candidates must have been registered with their specific party for that duration, while NPA candidates must have been unaffiliated and not a member of any political party during that time. The bill allows political parties and other entities to file legal actions (declaratory and injunctive relief) challenging a candidate's eligibility if they believe the candidate does not meet these registration requirements. If a circuit court issues a final judgment determining that a candidate has not complied with these rules, that candidate will be disqualified and prevented from appearing on the ballot. The provisions of this bill will take effect on July 1, 2025, giving potential candidates and political organizations time to understand and prepare for the new registration continuity requirements.
