This bill amends the New York Public Authorities Law to give the New York City Council (which represents a city with over one million residents) the power to approve or reject eminent domain actions by public authorities or public benefit corporations. Under this proposed legislation, before the city council can vote to approve or disapprove an eminent domain action, they must first hold at least one public hearing near the property that might be acquired. The vote to approve or deny the eminent domain action would require a majority of city council members. This bill aims to provide local government with more direct oversight and input into significant land acquisition decisions that could impact the community. The legislation would take effect 90 days after becoming law, giving public authorities and corporations time to adapt to the new approval process.
