This bill expands the authority of pharmacists in Arizona to administer emergency medications in specific circumstances. Under the new law, pharmacists who are already authorized to order and administer medications can now give emergency medication to manage acute allergic reactions that occur at the pharmacy. When a pharmacist administers such emergency medication, they are required to notify the patient's primary care provider or physician within 48 hours, making a reasonable effort to identify the provider through pharmacy records or by asking the patient (or parent/guardian if the patient is a minor). The pharmacist must also follow the pharmacy's standard operating procedures and emergency management policies. The bill defines "emergency medication" as including epinephrine, corticosteroids, albuterol, oxygen, and antihistamines. Importantly, the legislation includes a provision protecting primary care providers and physicians from legal action for adverse reactions or complications arising from the pharmacist's emergency medication administration when it is done without a prior prescription. This bill aims to provide pharmacists with greater flexibility to respond quickly to potentially life-threatening allergic reactions while maintaining professional standards and communication with the patient's primary healthcare provider.
