This bill establishes a new procedure for reimbursing counties for expenses related to assigned statutory probate court judges in contested matters. Specifically, when a party files a motion to have a statutory probate court judge hear a contested probate matter, and that motion is granted, the assigned judge is now required to order, to the extent possible, that the county be reimbursed for the judge's compensation and expenses. The reimbursement will come from the estate involved in the proceeding and/or the parties to the proceeding, with the judge determining an equitable way to apportion these costs. The bill also clarifies that judges assigned outside their home county are entitled to $25 per day of service, which will be paid by the county in which they served. These changes will apply only to motions filed on or after the bill's effective date of September 1, 2025, ensuring a clear transition point for the new reimbursement requirements.
