This bill repeals Section 896.1 of the California Military and Veterans Code, which previously prohibited dependents of veterans from receiving state educational benefits if they were already receiving federal educational benefits (such as those under Chapter 35, Title 38 of the United States Code) or duplicate assistance from another government source. Currently, existing law defines a veteran's dependent as including the spouse of a totally disabled veteran and provides educational benefits for dependents of veterans who were killed during military service or are totally disabled. By removing the prohibition on receiving multiple educational benefits, this bill will allow veterans' dependents to potentially receive both state and federal educational benefits simultaneously, which could provide greater financial support for educational pursuits.
