This bill requires health insurance providers in New York State to provide comprehensive coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas) and related conditions. The bill mandates that insurers cover all costs associated with diagnosing and treating uterine fibroids, including conditions related to pain, discomfort, and infertility. Covered diagnostic and treatment options are extensive, ranging from pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and lab tests to various medical procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging, medication, noninvasive procedures, uterine artery embolization, radiofrequency ablation, different types of myomectomy (laparoscopic, robotic, hysteroscopic), endometrial ablation, and hysterectomy. The bill applies to various types of health insurance policies, including individual accident and health insurance, group policies, and medical expense indemnity corporations. Importantly, all treatments must be recommended by a healthcare provider licensed to practice in New York State. The legislation will take effect 120 days after becoming law, providing insurance companies time to adjust their coverage policies.
