This bill requires health insurance entities, which are defined as organizations that provide health insurance, to reimburse chiropractic physicians at the same rate as other physicians for the same services, provided those services are listed in a nationally recognized code book like the American Medical Association's Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code book. This means that insurance companies cannot use different payment methods or amounts for chiropractic services compared to services provided by medical doctors if the service itself is the same and coded identically. The bill also prevents insurers from creating special chiropractic-specific codes or payment systems to avoid this equal reimbursement rule, though it allows for the use of national uniform relative value units (RVUs) which measure the resources needed for a service. Importantly, this provision does not apply to government programs like TennCare or CoverKids. The bill also makes a technical change to refer to "chiropractic physician" instead of "chiropractor" in existing law and is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
