This bill modifies Minnesota's special license plate provisions for veterans, specifically establishing a new special license plate design for recipients of the National Defense Service Medal. The bill updates existing statutes to allow veterans who have received the National Defense Service Medal to apply for a special license plate that will bear the inscription "NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE VET" and include a facsimile of the official medal. The changes are part of a broader set of provisions for veteran-specific license plates, which already exist for various conflicts and service medals such as Vietnam, World War II, Korean Conflict, and others. The bill requires applicants to be registered owners of a passenger automobile, recreational motor vehicle, or one-ton pickup truck (not a commercial vehicle), have served in active military service, and have been discharged under honorable conditions. Veterans must provide a certified copy of their discharge papers when applying for these special plates. The new license plate option will become available on January 1, 2026, and will provide another way for veterans to recognize and display their military service through their vehicle registration.
