This bill appropriates money from the general fund to the Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture to provide compensation payments for livestock damage caused by wolves and crop or fence damage caused by elk. In fiscal years 2026 and 2027, separate appropriations will be made for wolf and elk depredation (destruction or damage) payments under Minnesota Statutes sections 3.737 and 3.7371, respectively. If the funding for either year is insufficient, money from the second year can be used in the first year. Additionally, up to $5,000 per year can be used to reimburse university extension agents for determining fair market values of destroyed or crippled livestock. The bill also gives the Commissioner of Agriculture discretion to transfer funds between wolf and elk depredation programs if claims are unusually high, providing flexibility in addressing agricultural losses caused by wildlife.
