This bill amends Mississippi state law to provide a $4,000 annual salary supplement specifically for National Board Certified Teachers who are employed in public school districts located in areas designated by the State Board of Education as geographically critical teacher shortage areas. The bill modifies an existing section of the Mississippi Code that outlines teacher salary schedules and supplemental pay. Under the new provision, teachers who qualify must have obtained a Master Teacher Certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and be working in a designated shortage area. If a qualifying teacher is assigned for less than a full year or less than full time, their salary supplement will be prorated based on their assignment in the critical geographic area as of June 15th of the school year. The salary supplement is in addition to any other compensation the teacher might receive and is separate from existing salary supplements for National Board Certified Teachers. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2025, providing a financial incentive intended to help address teacher shortages in specific geographic regions of Mississippi by offering additional compensation to highly qualified educators.
