This bill amends New York State's vehicle and traffic law to establish an escalating fine structure for speed camera violations in New York City. Currently, all speed camera violations carry a flat $50 fine, but the proposed legislation would create a graduated penalty system where fines increase with the number of violations within a two-year period. Specifically, the first two violations would remain at $50, but subsequent violations would incur progressively higher fines: $100 for a third violation, $125 for a fourth violation, $150 for a fifth violation, $200 for a sixth violation, and $250 for a seventh or any subsequent violations. Additionally, the parking violations bureau may impose an extra $25 penalty for failing to respond to a notice of liability within the prescribed timeframe. The bill is designed to discourage repeated speeding by implementing increasingly significant financial consequences for drivers who consistently violate speed limits in New York City. The changes will take effect 60 days after the bill becomes law.
