This bill modifies existing Kansas law regarding electric transmission line siting permits by extending the time frame for the state corporation commission (SCC) to issue a final order on a transmission line siting application from 120 days to 180 days. Currently, when an electric utility wants to build a transmission line, it must file an application with the SCC that includes the proposed location, names of affected landowners, and other required information. The SCC must then hold a public hearing within 90 days of the application filing to determine the necessity and reasonableness of the proposed line's location. The key change in this bill is to give the SCC additional time (an extra 60 days) to review and make a final decision on transmission line siting permit applications, which could help ensure more thorough review of complex infrastructure projects. The bill will take effect upon publication in the Kansas register and includes a provision to repeal the existing version of the statute.
