This proposed constitutional amendment seeks to add a new section to the Nebraska Constitution that would establish a fundamental right to a clean and healthy environment for all people. Specifically, the amendment would guarantee citizens' rights to pure water, clean air, healthy soils, balanced ecosystems, a safe climate, and diverse native flora and fauna, as well as the preservation of natural, cultural, scenic, recreational, and healthful environmental qualities. The resolution would also designate the state and its political subdivisions as trustees of Nebraska's natural resources, obligating them to conserve, protect, and maintain these resources for the benefit of current and future generations. The proposed amendment would be self-executing, meaning its provisions could be directly implemented without additional legislation. If approved, the amendment would be placed on the ballot for voter consideration during the November 2026 general election, with voters able to choose "For" or "Against" the constitutional change.
