Specifically, the commissioners will assess how the bridge's functionality might be impacted by several ongoing and future projects, such as the Great Wolf Lodge development, the Preston Riverwalk Project, Thames River Development, and the expansion of the Preston Incinerator site. The study will also examine the bridge's ability to accommodate heavy loads that are currently prohibited from using the Gold Star Memorial Bridge and consider potential scenarios if the Gold Star Memorial Bridge were to be closed or restricted due to a public safety incident. By July 1, 2026, the commissioners are required to submit their study results and recommendations to the legislative committees responsible for commerce and transportation, providing insights that could potentially inform future infrastructure decisions and bridge rehabilitation efforts.
