This bill requires nonpublic schools to provide and maintain automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which are portable electronic devices used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm. Specifically, the bill mandates that nonpublic schools install AEDs in each instructional facility in quantities deemed appropriate by education and health commissioners. Schools must keep these devices well-maintained and tested according to manufacturer and government standards. The bill also requires schools to ensure that during curricular, extracurricular, and athletic events, at least one staff member trained in AED operation is present. For off-site athletic events, schools must provide AED equipment on-site. Additionally, the bill stipulates that AED operators must have completed a training course approved by a nationally recognized organization, with exceptions for healthcare professionals and good samaritans. Schools must report every AED use to local emergency services, notify regional emergency services councils about their AED locations, and post signs indicating where AEDs are stored. The law provides liability protections for AED users and ensures that AED operation is not considered an unlawful professional practice. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2026.
