This bill modifies Mississippi state law regarding the use of colored lights on emergency vehicles, specifically allowing certain government-owned fire department vehicles to display blue lights under specific conditions. The bill permits fire department vehicles to use blue lights in addition to red and white lights, but only if three criteria are met: (1) the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating over 24,000 pounds, (2) the use of blue lights is authorized in writing by the fire chief of the government agency, and (3) the blue lights are only displayed on the rear of the vehicle. Importantly, this provision does not apply to volunteer fire department vehicles that receive funding under Section 83-1-39. The bill also updates related sections of the state vehicle code to conform with this new provision, ensuring that the use of blue lights by fire department vehicles is legally permissible. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2025, and violations of these lighting regulations can result in a misdemeanor charge with a fine between $50 and $500.
