This bill introduces the Mississippi Halo Law for First Responders, which creates legal protections for first responders by making it a misdemeanor to approach or remain within 25 feet of a first responder after receiving a verbal warning. The law specifically applies to law enforcement officers, correctional probation officers, firefighters, and emergency medical care providers who are performing their legal duties. A person can be charged if they knowingly and willfully approach a first responder with the intent to impede their work, threaten them with physical harm, or harass them. The term "harass" is defined as engaging in a course of conduct that intentionally causes substantial emotional distress to the first responder without a legitimate purpose. Violations of this law can result in criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment in county jail for up to one year, or both. The law is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and aims to provide additional safety and respect for first responders while they are carrying out their professional responsibilities.
