AI Summary

This bill renames the "Comprehensive Hurricane Damage Mitigation Program" to the "Strengthen Mississippi Homes Program" and makes several key changes to the state's hurricane and wind damage mitigation efforts. The program will now explicitly include wind damage mitigation, and several previous requirements have been removed, including the cost-benefit study on wind hazard mitigation and the wind certification and hurricane mitigation inspections. The financial grants available to property owners for retrofitting have been increased from $10,000 to $15,000 per recipient, and the Commissioner of Insurance will now have the authority to establish grant eligibility criteria through regulations. The bill also eliminates the previous advisory council associated with the program. Additionally, the bill modifies the funding mechanism by changing the agent certificate of authority fee from $25 to $50, with half of this fee to be deposited into the State General Fund and half into the newly renamed Strengthen Mississippi Homes Fund. The program's goal remains to help property owners retrofit their homes to be less vulnerable to hurricane and wind damage, but with streamlined administrative processes and increased financial support.
