AI Summary
This bill transfers the responsibility for employing school attendance officers from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) to local school districts, effective July 1, 2025. The bill clarifies the role of the Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement and Dropout Prevention, which will now provide oversight, technical assistance, and training to school attendance officers employed by local districts. Key provisions include establishing a minimum salary of $30,000 for newly hired school attendance officers, allowing local school boards to provide additional compensation, and requiring the state to fund one school attendance officer for every 3,000 compulsory-school-age children in a county. The bill ensures that current state employees will be transferred to local school district employment without interruption of service, salary, or benefits, and will receive a 25% salary increase. School attendance officers will continue to have responsibilities such as investigating student absences, contacting parents, and working with courts and law enforcement to ensure school attendance. The State Department of Education and Mississippi Association of School Superintendents are required to provide a joint report to the Legislature in 2027 on the status and progress of this transition.
