This bill modifies the high school curriculum requirements in Texas by updating the social studies credit specifications. Specifically, the bill changes the existing requirement for social studies credits by removing the option to use "economics" as a standalone half-credit and instead mandates a half-credit specifically in "personal financial literacy & economics" alongside the existing half-credit in government. The bill also adds a requirement for a full credit in economics as an option alongside world geography or world history. These changes will apply only to students entering ninth grade in the 2025-2026 school year or later, ensuring a gradual implementation of the new curriculum requirements. Students already in high school during that year will continue to follow the previous curriculum standards. The bill will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in the Texas legislature, or otherwise on September 1, 2025, with the goal of enhancing students' understanding of financial literacy and economic principles as part of their high school education.
