This bill requires public schools in New York to offer plant-based food options to students upon request, at no additional cost, and with full descriptions of these options in all written food service materials. The legislation defines a "plant-based food option" as food or beverages free of animal products (which include meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs, and honey) that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a meat alternate for the national school lunch program. Schools must respond reasonably to student or parental requests for plant-based meals, and these requests will apply to all meals and snacks the student is expected to participate in. Importantly, the bill does not mandate that only plant-based options be served, but ensures they are available as alternatives, and schools are advised to consult with their district nutrition advisory committee when implementing these changes. The act will take effect immediately and apply to public school food service beginning with the school year one year after it becomes law, giving schools time to prepare and adjust their food service offerings.
