This bill modifies the existing provisions for boathouse leases at Soudan Underground Mine State Park, which originated from a 1965 land conveyance by United States Steel Corporation. Previously, the law required the commissioner of natural resources to automatically renew boathouse leases with specific restrictions, such as limiting lease transfers to family members and capping lease rates. The new bill gives the commissioner more flexibility, allowing them to either lease the property under standard state lease terms or sell the property outright. The bill removes previous limitations on lease transfers, number of lessees, and lease rate calculations. The commissioner is still prohibited from canceling a boathouse lease except for noncompliance with the lease agreement, and must continue to provide a written receipt for lease payments. Additionally, the bill includes a provision for the commissioner to contact U.S.X. Corporation and local government units about potentially including specific parcels of land around Vermillion Lake within the state park boundaries, detailing nine separate land areas by their legal descriptions.
