AI Summary

This bill requires community colleges and public universities in Mississippi to develop comprehensive mental health emergency response plans and expand mental health support services for students. The legislation modifies existing state law to broaden the definition of emergency response plans to include mental health alongside cardiac emergencies, mandating that institutions create detailed protocols for addressing mental health crises. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, colleges must establish emergency response teams, train staff in mental health first aid, and integrate local emergency services into their plans. The bill also requires institutions to share mental health resource information during new student orientations, on their websites, and in public campus spaces. Additionally, the Mississippi Department of Mental Health will collaborate with college boards to develop informational materials about mental health and wellbeing for students, parents, and community members. Institutions must partner with Community Mental Health Centers or private providers to offer high-quality, low-cost mental health resources, including free services. The goal is to improve mental health awareness, preparedness, and support for students across Mississippi's higher education institutions.
