This bill modifies the existing New Mexico law regarding County Health Care Assistance Funds to expand the authorized uses of these funds. Specifically, the bill allows counties to use these funds for expenses related to indigent (low-income) individuals' healthcare needs, which now include paying for burial or cremation costs, ambulance transportation, hospital care, and health services. The fund can also cover all or part of monthly health insurance premiums for indigent patients, as well as out-of-pocket expenses like copayments and deductibles. Additionally, counties can use the fund to cover administrative expenses directly associated with these healthcare-related expenditures. The bill also maintains the existing provision that allows the fund to be used to meet a county's obligation under a specific existing health care statute (Section 27-10-4 NMSA 1978). These provisions aim to provide financial support for low-income individuals who might otherwise struggle to access necessary medical services and end-of-life arrangements.
