This bill, amending the Public School Code of 1949, allows students in eleventh or twelfth grade, who are at least 16 years old and employed (paid or voluntary) at a congregate care facility, to earn elective credits toward graduation. A congregate care facility is defined to include nursing facilities, personal care homes, assisted living residences, certain Medicare programs for the elderly, and continuing care retirement communities. Students can earn one elective credit for every 250 hours worked, with a maximum of two credits. The bill requires school entities (school districts, charter schools, etc.) and nonpublic schools to establish an application process that collects information about the student's employment, including the facility's name and contact, supervisor's name, nature of work, and hours worked. Schools must also set deadlines and conditions for credit approval, ensuring the employment meets specific vocational education requirements, and can only award credit after approving the application and verifying all requirements are met.
