This bill increases the number of days that a retired municipal employee can work in a calendar year without interrupting their pension benefits from 75 to 90 days. Under the current law, retired members of the municipal retirement system are allowed to work a limited number of days while still receiving their pension. The new provision extends this work period by 15 days, meaning retirees can now work up to 90 days in a calendar year without having their pension payments suspended. An important exception is noted for police officers working private details paid by non-governmental entities, who are not subject to this day limit. If a retired member works beyond the 90-day threshold, their annuity will be temporarily suspended, and they will not receive pension credit or be required to make pension contributions for that additional service. The bill also preserves the existing provision that allows retired members to serve as elected city or town council members or school committee members while continuing to receive their retirement allowance for other services. The legislation will take effect immediately upon passage.
