AI Summary
This bill establishes the Mississippi Dyslexia Education Funding Act, which creates a grant program to support students with dyslexia across various schools in the state. The bill provides a comprehensive definition of dyslexia as a specific learning disability and outlines detailed requirements for dyslexia therapy, which must be research-based, Orton-Gillingham based, and delivered in small group settings with specialized instructional approaches. Under the program, each school will receive a minimum grant of $100,000 by October 1, 2025, with additional funds distributed through an application process administered by the State Department of Education. The bill creates a special Dyslexia Education Fund in the state treasury to support these efforts, with provisions allowing the department to use up to 1.25% of fund monies to cover oversight costs. The legislation also establishes a scholarship program that gives students with dyslexia the option to attend alternative public or nonpublic schools to receive comprehensive multisensory dyslexia therapy. The department is required to provide an annual report on fund distribution to state leadership, ensuring transparency and accountability in implementing this supportive educational initiative.
