AI Summary

This bill creates a new State Board of Health Professions to address the growing complexity and potential overlap among different health professional regulatory boards in Mississippi. The board will consist of 13 members: one representative from six existing state health professional boards (Medical Licensure, Pharmacy, Nursing, Chiropractors, Dental Examiners, and Optometry), five at-large members appointed by the Governor who cannot be licensed in the regulated professions, and two ex officio members who are the chairs of the House and Senate public health committees. Board members will be appointed for four-year terms, with the board's chairman elected from among its members. The board's key responsibilities include evaluating coordination among health regulatory boards, assessing the need for regulation of health professions, serving as a conflict resolution forum, advising the Governor and Legislature on health profession regulation, promoting professional competency standards, reviewing disciplinary processes, and examining scope of practice conflicts. The Department of Health will provide administrative support and budget request for the board, which is set to begin operations on July 1, 2025. The bill aims to create a comprehensive oversight mechanism to address regulatory challenges in the state's healthcare professional landscape.
