AI Summary

This bill amends Mississippi law to authorize dental hygienists to work under general supervision (meaning they do not require direct, in-person oversight by a dentist) in nursing homes and correctional facilities, subject to several specific requirements. To qualify, a dental hygienist must have at least four years of full-time practice, be supervised by a Mississippi-licensed dentist, complete six hours of medical emergency continuing education within the past two years, maintain current CPR certification, and follow specific protocols. The supervising dentist must have previously examined the patient and continue to do so at least every nine months. Dental hygienists in these settings are limited to performing specific functions such as oral prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, silver diamine fluoride treatment, and oral hygiene instruction, and cannot diagnose patient conditions. Additionally, a single dentist may supervise no more than six dental hygienists in these facilities. The bill aims to increase access to dental care in settings like nursing homes and correctional facilities by providing more flexibility in dental hygienist supervision, while maintaining patient safety through detailed professional requirements. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2025.
