This resolution honors Chief Harold Tantaquidgeon, a notable Mohegan Tribe member and veteran who made significant contributions to Native American culture and military service. Born in 1904 in Mohegan, Connecticut, Tantaquidgeon served in both the United States Coast Guard and Army, becoming one of the youngest chief petty officers in Coast Guard history and the first Native American to achieve the rank of chief boatswain's mate. During World War II, he survived a plane crash in New Guinea using wilderness survival skills learned from his father. He was also a co-founder of the Tantaquidgeon Museum in 1931, where he lectured on Native American traditions and taught survival skills.
