This bill requires the Texas Department of State Health Services to develop procedures for school districts to disseminate comprehensive Type 1 diabetes information to students and parents annually. The information must cover key aspects of the disease, including symptoms, diagnostic methods, potential consequences if untreated, risk factors, warning signs, screening processes, early detection methods, treatment availability and effectiveness, and potential treatment risks and side effects. School districts must distribute this information in a manner likely to reach parents' attention, with the specific form and content to be prescribed by the department. The bill allows school districts to use alternative information distribution methods with written consent from the Department of State Health Services, provided the alternative method is deemed effective. These new requirements will apply starting in the 2025-2026 school year, with the goal of increasing awareness and understanding of Type 1 diabetes among students and their families. The legislation takes effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in the Texas legislature, or on September 1, 2025, if it does not receive the immediate voting threshold.
