AI Summary
This bill proposes a comprehensive redistricting of Mississippi's Chancery Court Districts, making significant changes to the geographic boundaries, number of chancellors, and residency requirements for judicial districts across the state. The bill updates the composition of various chancery court districts, often adding or removing counties, and modifies the number and placement of chancellor positions. For example, some districts will see a reduction from three to two chancellors, while others will expand to three or four chancellors. The bill also introduces new residency requirements for chancellors, specifying that they must live in certain counties within their district. The changes are implemented in stages, with most modifications set to take effect on January 1, 2027. Candidates for the new chancellor positions will run in the November 2026 general election, with elected judges serving four-year terms beginning January 1, 2027. The bill is part of the state's constitutional obligation to redistrict judicial districts within five years of the federal decennial census, ensuring that judicial representation reflects current population distributions and community needs.
