This bill amends Washington state law to expand Medicaid coverage for traditional health care practices, specifically focusing on services provided through Indian Health Service facilities, tribal facilities, and urban Indian organizations. The bill adds a new definition for "traditional health care practices" as the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and practices based on indigenous cultural theories and experiences used for health maintenance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of physical and mental illnesses. By September 1, 2025, the state health care authority is required to apply for a federal waiver from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to provide coverage for these traditional health care practices. If approved, Medicaid beneficiaries will be able to access these services at Indian health care facilities. The bill includes a funding contingency, meaning that if specific funding is not allocated in the omnibus appropriations act by June 30, 2025, the entire act will become null and void. This legislation aims to recognize and support traditional indigenous health care approaches within the state's Medicaid system.
