AI Summary
This bill authorizes pharmacists in Mississippi to test for, screen, and provide treatment for minor, nonchronic health conditions, which are defined as short-term health issues typically managed with non-controlled medications or minimal treatment. The bill specifically lists conditions such as influenza, strep throat, COVID-19, respiratory illnesses, lice, urinary tract infections, and certain skin conditions. Pharmacists may use CLIA-waived tests (tests approved under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) to guide clinical decision-making and can delegate administrative tasks to pharmacy interns or technicians under their supervision. The bill also prevents health insurance plans from denying reimbursement for pharmacy-provided services that would be covered if performed by a physician or advanced practice registered nurse. Additionally, the bill amends existing pharmacy practice definitions to explicitly include ordering, performing, and interpreting certain tests, as well as initiating, administering, or modifying drug therapy. The legislation is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and aims to expand the role of pharmacists in providing accessible healthcare services for minor health conditions.
