Bill Summary
This bill relates to short course law enforcement training requirements. Currently, an individual who is not a certified law enforcement officer may apply for attendance at a short course of study at an approved law enforcement training program if the individual is sponsored by a law enforcement agency. An individual who submits an application shall, at a minimum, submit proof of successful completion of a two-year or four-year police science or criminal justice program at an accredited educational institution in this state approved by the academy. The bill removes the requirement that the two-year or four-year police science or criminal justice program must be from an accredited educational institution in Iowa, but retains the requirement that the two-year or four-year police science or criminal justice program be completed at an accredited educational institution approved by the academy.
AI Summary
This bill modifies the requirements for individuals seeking to attend a short course law enforcement training program who are not currently certified law enforcement officers. Specifically, the bill removes the requirement that an applicant's two-year or four-year police science or criminal justice program must be completed at an educational institution located in Iowa. Instead, the bill retains the requirement that the program must be completed at an accredited educational institution approved by the law enforcement training academy, but eliminates the geographical restriction. This change effectively broadens the pool of potential applicants by allowing individuals who have completed police science or criminal justice programs at accredited institutions outside of Iowa to apply for the short course law enforcement training. The modification aims to provide more flexibility in training requirements while maintaining the fundamental educational standards for aspiring law enforcement professionals.
