This bill increases the number of speed monitoring systems allowed on Interstate 83 in Baltimore City from two to four and makes the authorization to place these systems permanent. Specifically, the legislation modifies existing transportation law to remove the previous five-year time limitation on using speed monitoring systems (commonly known as speed cameras) on this interstate highway. The bill requires that the use of these speed monitoring systems must still be authorized by the local governing body through a local law enacted after providing reasonable notice and holding a public hearing. By removing the sunset provision, the speed monitoring systems can now be used indefinitely on Interstate 83, with an expanded capacity to place up to four such systems in Baltimore City. The bill is set to take effect on June 1, 2025, which updates the previous effective date and eliminates the previous provision that would have automatically terminated the law on June 30, 2026.
