AI Summary

This bill, known as the Stop Spoofing Law, amends the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act to address misleading or inaccurate caller identification information. The bill defines key terms such as "caller identification information" (name, phone number, or identifying data of a call's origin) and "telecommunications carrier" (as defined in the Public Utilities Act). It makes it an unlawful practice for telecommunications carriers to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller identification information through any caller identification service, which includes services that display phone numbers or call origination details. The Attorney General is required to create and maintain a website where Illinois residents can report incidents of misleading caller ID information, collecting details such as the person's name, location, telecommunications carrier, and call description. The Attorney General will use these reports to enforce the law. The bill provides exceptions for caller ID blocking, authorized law enforcement activities, and authorized federal intelligence activities, ensuring that legitimate uses of caller ID manipulation are not prohibited.
