This bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to create a new type of special license plate specifically for volunteer firefighters. Under this legislation, the Secretary of State may issue special registration plates to volunteer firefighters when requested by a municipality or fire protection district's fire department. These special plates can only be affixed to passenger or light commercial vehicles (weighing 8,000 pounds or less) owned by the fire department or an individual volunteer firefighter. The design and color of the plates will be determined entirely by the Secretary of State, and they are not required to include the standard "Land of Lincoln" designation. The plates will follow the standard multi-year expiration procedure established in existing vehicle registration law, and the fee for these plates will be the same as standard first division vehicle plates. This bill aims to provide recognition and potentially some benefits to volunteer firefighters by creating a unique license plate that acknowledges their important community service.
