This bill amends the University of Illinois Act to expand the existing scholarship program for children of veterans. Under the current law, each county is annually entitled to one honorary scholarship at the University of Illinois for children of veterans who served during specific periods of military conflict, with a maximum of three scholarships per county. The bill specifically adds two new military campaign medals—the Kosovo Campaign Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal—to the list of qualifying service periods. This means children of veterans who served and received these medals will now be eligible for the scholarship, in addition to those who served during previously recognized periods of conflict like World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and operations in Beirut, Grenada, and the Southwest Asia region. The bill maintains the existing limit of three scholarships per county and continues to provide educational support for children of military service members who have served during recognized periods of military engagement.
