This bill amends Pennsylvania's vehicle lighting regulations to allow vehicles under 14,000 pounds (except motor carrier vehicles) to install an ornamental lamp bar or auxiliary lighting strip on their rear, with specific requirements and limitations. The new lighting equipment must be the same color and similar illumination as the vehicle's stop lamps, mounted horizontally on the rear of the vehicle, and in safe operating condition. The lighting strip can contain LED bulbs and may operate with a vehicle's turn signal, but cannot feature flashing or revolving lights (except when used with a turn signal). A vehicle can only have one such lighting strip, and the equipment must be non-original, non-battery-powered, no longer than 60 inches, no wider than 2 inches, and no deeper than one inch. The bill specifically excludes vehicles that already have manufacturer-installed rear lighting equipment consistent with this type of lighting strip. The legislation aims to provide clarity and standardization for aftermarket rear vehicle lighting, ensuring safety while allowing vehicle owners some customization options. The new law will take effect 60 days after its passage.
