Bill Summary
This bill modifies provisions related to school concussion and brain injury policies. Current Code section 280.13C requires the department of health and human services, the Iowa high school athletic association, and the Iowa girls high school athletic union to work together to develop training materials and courses regarding concussions and brain injuries, to distribute information related to concussions and brain injuries, and to develop protocols related to when a student may return to participation in an extracurricular interscholastic activity after showing signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or brain injury. Current Code section 280.13C also establishes standards related to when a student, at the direction of a licensed health care provider, among others, should be removed from participation in an extracurricular interscholastic activity due to signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or brain injury, as well as when the student may return following removal. The bill modifies the definition of “licensed health care provider” for purposes of Code section 280.13C to include a person who holds a doctorate in psychology with specialty training in neuropsychology or concussion management.
