This bill amends the New York State Labor Law to clarify safety requirements for contractors building new one-family residential construction. Specifically, the bill adds contractors building new one-family residential construction to the list of entities that must provide safety equipment and comply with workplace safety regulations. Previously, owners of one and two-family dwellings who did not direct or control the work were exempt from these requirements. Now, contractors specifically constructing new one-family homes will be required to furnish and erect proper safety devices such as scaffolding, hoists, ladders, slings, and other protective equipment to ensure worker safety during construction, demolition, repair, alteration, painting, cleaning, or pointing of buildings. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, allowing time for contractors and regulatory agencies to understand and implement the new safety provisions. This change aims to enhance workplace safety protections for workers engaged in constructing new one-family residential buildings by ensuring they have appropriate safety equipment and follow established safety guidelines.
