This bill provides a new provision to support students whose parents are active-duty military members who are transferred to South Dakota. Specifically, the bill requires school districts to implement a student's existing educational support plan (such as a Section 504 plan, individualized family service plan, or individualized education program) within 30 calendar days of enrollment. These plans help students with disabilities or special educational needs receive appropriate accommodations and services. The bill applies when a student is the child of an active-duty military member who has been transferred to the state and already has an existing educational support plan from their previous school district. The school district must accept unofficial records from the student's parent or guardian while working to obtain official records, and must take reasonable steps to request the student's official educational records from the previous school. Importantly, the student's parent or guardian and the school district can mutually agree to extend the 30-day implementation deadline if needed. The goal is to ensure a smooth educational transition for military families and minimize disruption to a student's established educational support services when they move to a new school district.
