This bill amends the New York environmental conservation law to prohibit the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, in hunting activities. The bill first defines an unmanned aerial vehicle as any aircraft operated without direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft. It then establishes new restrictions on UAV use during hunting seasons, specifically prohibiting their use to search for, scout, locate, hunt, detect, or otherwise aid in taking wild animals. However, the bill does allow for a limited exception: hunters may use UAVs with infrared capabilities to recover a legally taken animal, but only on their own property or with the explicit permission of the property owner. This legislation aims to maintain fair hunting practices by preventing technological advantages that could give hunters an unfair edge in locating game animals during hunting seasons. The bill takes effect immediately upon passage.
